Most Haunted Asylums and Hospitals in Florida

Are you fascinated by the eerie and unexplained? Do ghost stories send a thrill down your spine? If so, Florida, known for its sunshine and beaches, also harbors a darker side—its haunted asylums, hospitals, and mental institutions. Let us take you on an adventure through Florida’s most haunted places and share their chilling histories and ghostly legends.

A Glimpse into Florida’s Haunted Past

Florida may be best known for its vibrant nightlife and theme parks, but it also has a history rich with tales of mental hospitals, psychiatric wards, and abandoned hospital sites that still echo with the cries of the past. Whether you’re a ghost hunter, a local history buff, or a paranormal enthusiast, these locations offer a glimpse into the state’s haunted history.

Sunland Hospital Site — Orlando’s Eerie Playground

Once the notorious Sunland Mental Hospital, this site is now a children’s playground, but its past continues to haunt Orlando’s curious explorers. Originally known as the W.T. Edwards Tuberculosis Hospital in the 1950s, it was repurposed into Sunland Training Centers by the state of Florida when healthcare improved and tuberculosis hospitals were no longer needed to treat tuberculosis patients.

Sunland Orlando was infamous for its horrific conditions and patient maltreatment, including physical abuse and torture. It closed in the early 1980s, and the main building was demolished in 1999 after a serious accident where someone fell down the elevator shaft. Only the old Administration Building remains, drawing ghost hunters and thrill-seekers who report strange lights and sounds. Some say the swings move by themselves, making it Orlando’s number one spot for paranormal activity.

Princeton Hospital — Haunting in Lakeside

Princeton Hospital, now known as Lakeside Hospital, offers a different kind of eerie experience. This psychiatric hospital is rumored to be home to restless spirits. People have reported seeing wheelchairs moving on their own, flickering lights, and unexplained knocking. Most active part of the hospital? The ghost of a patient is said to be especially active on the second and third floors, making it a must-visit for ghost hunters seeking a scare.

Royal Hope Hospital — St. Augustine’s Spooky Legacy

St. Augustine, known for its rich history and beautiful architecture, also harbors the Royal Hope Hospital, a site with a truly eerie past. Built in the late 1700s as Our Lady of Guadalupe, it served as a military hospital. During recent construction, it was discovered that the original building was built atop a Native American burial ground, likely Timucuan.

The Travel Channel ranks Royal Hope Hospital among the five most haunted hospitals. It features several haunted sections, including the Mourning Room, The Surgeon’s Office, The Ward, and The Apothecary. Visitors often report ghostly apparitions and strange occurrences, making it a must-see for paranormal enthusiasts.

If you’re captivated by haunted hospitals and asylums, Florida offers even more spine-tingling sites to explore:

  • Greenwood Cemetery in Orlando is the final resting place for many who died at Sunland. Visitors report hearing children laughing, especially in the Babyland section. Notorious gangster Ma Barker is also buried here, and her ghost is said to haunt her home in Ocala.
  • The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables exudes luxury and ghostly allure. Opened in 1926, it was a hotspot for the rich and famous. During World War II, it became a military hospital. Beyond Florida — Haunted Hospitals Across the U.S.

For those willing to venture beyond Florida, the U.S. hosts other chilling asylums and hospitals:

  • Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, KY, began as a two-story hospital in 1910. It expanded to five floors and housed up to 400 patients with tuberculosis. The death toll was so high that a body chute was built for easier removal. Visitors report sightings of apparitions and unexplainable sounds.
  • Danvers State Hospital in Danvers, MA, opened in 1878 as an asylum. It was known for its harsh treatments and overcrowding, leading to patient abuse. The hospital closed in 1992, but visitors claim to see ghostly figures and hear screams and footsteps.
  • Genesee County Poor Farm/House in Genesee County, NY, was originally built in 1826 as a poorhouse for the homeless and destitute. It eventually became a psychiatric institution known for its harsh treatments and high death rates. The building is now abandoned, but visitors report feeling cold spots and hearing unexplained noises.  It is also known as the Rolling Hills Asylum.  Those who had no family members were buried onsite.
  • Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia. Also known as the Weston State Hospital, this asylum in Weston, West Virginia was built in 1864 to house 250 patients but ended up housing over 2,000 in the 1950s. The largest mental hospital in the United States title goes to various locations, but this one ranks at the top. The facility closed in 1994 due to poor conditions and is now a museum. Visitors and staff report paranormal sightings, including ghostly children, disembodied screams, and slamming doors.  Looking for more haunted places in West Virginia?  Check out our list.
